Kayaking or canoeing in Eagle Creek Reservoir has been on our to-do list since we had some of our engagement photos taken there last summer. We both love the water, so the setting was perfect for us. We even had a few close encounters last year with some wildlife-- a hungry raccoon, deer at dusk, and an owl right off the path. We made a trip back in the spring to hike with Huck through the park. When Eric mentioned wishing he could canoe on the White River, I suggested Eagle Creek, and we were off.
Eagle Creek Park has an entrance fee of $5 per car for Marion County residents. We paid and headed back to the marina. There, you can rent canoes or 1-2 person kayaks by the hour. In the summer months, the last hour rental goes out at 7:00 pm. The marina staff was super friendly, and for the sake of the camera, we chose a canoe.
We really had a beautiful evening to be out. The weather was great, and the water was fairly calm. It was definitely a good work-out...especially when Eric stopped to take a photo...
We did a lot of the above...sitting and enjoying the evening. It's easy to get caught up in the stresses of work and life or sit at home and watch terrible TV. It felt refreshing to take a mini-adventure on a week night. We spoke with a pilot from Wisconsin who had flown clients to Eagle Creek Airpark several times but had never been able to spend time in Indianapolis. She spent the day at the Indianapolis Zoo then rented a kayak in the evening. She was so complimentary of our city, so surprised at the friendliness and amount of attractions. It was a pleasure to talk to her and see Indy through fresh eyes. Her word of advice for renting a kayak at Eagle Creek: wear a swim suit.
We even managed to catch a glimpse of an eagle above the reservoir and a family of deer grazing as we were leaving the park. How cute are those little guys?
